I was looking for a replacement to our latex mattress which is a bit too soft for me and my wife. We got it during the pandemic and it was nice. I knew we should have returned it right away as it was already a bit too soft for us. But the mattress company doesn’t take returns, they wanted us to just throw away the old mattress and show it in the trash and they would send us a new firmer one. I felt that was a waste of landfill space and opted not to get the firmer mattress. So here we are 2 years later and the old latex mattress is just a bit too soft for my wife and cannot sleep on her back or else she will wake up with back pain.So I found this along with other Made In Japan Shikifuton mattresses or pad, and was really interested in it. My wife and I have traveled to Japan before and had slept in a very traditional ryokan or Japanese inn, and were quite comfortable sleeping on the floor on the futon. So I went for it and bought this one, it was quite a bit more expensive than that next one, but it is a true queen size. I also liked the construction of it, not too heavy or light. It came in a plastic vacuum packed bag, which was then nicely wrapped in one of those brown fiber paper bag material. Inside the bag was the shikifuton’s fitted sheet, light gray in color. Nicely sewn no loose threads.Once the bag was opened the futon immediately started to puff up and expand. It had just a hint of of the foam smell but after about 5-10 minutes it had dissipated and was gone. I will say that I also had the sliding door open to get rid of the smell a bit. It also had an initial dampness to the futon, but after the smell was gone the dampness was gone as well.My wife really loves this futon and she sleeps so very soundly on it, but she also likes to sleep on the floor. So this is just heaven for her. As for me I do prefer a bit more cushioning, but I’m a bit bigger and much heavier than my wife, 5’10”, 210lbs. So it is a bit of an adjustment for me, but sleeping better. So my wife is more the average size of a typical Japanese person 5’2” 130 lbs. I will say there is a bit of a break in period for your body if you are not used to a more firm mattress. Also depends what you are putting the futon on as the underlayment. I made a make shift tatami mat of two IKEA childrens sleeping pads and then two ply korean floor mats to raise us off the concrete and carpet for now. I have not replaced the old mattress we were using and we are currently sleeping in the living room floor. Now it is only the second night we have slept on it and so far so good. I do wake up a bit stiff and sore as I’m a side sleeper. So I have opted for a taller pillow, to make up for the extra firmness in the futon and I think I might have found the right combo of pillows. Now just a few more nights to get my fat body used to the firmness. But I don’t wake up feeling like I slept in a hammock. After several disappointments with supposedly "firm" (and expensive!) mattresses, I purchased this futon. I put it on an adjustable base and topped it with a one inch gel pad. AT LAST I can sleep through the night without awakening with pain in my lower back and hip joints!I could have saved hundreds of dollars if I had tried this first instead of last. The ability to just bundle up your bed and toss it in the closet for more space is exactly what I was looking for. The fact that it's incredibly comfortable is a massive plus.I feel that this futon needs an actual review. I have slept on this futon for about 3 weeks now and I tell you what, it is as comfortable as any mattress I've had that is fairly firm.BACKGROUND ON ME: I slept on a brick for a mattress for 8 months and then a ridiculously soft mattress for 2 weeks after that prior to sleeping on this futon and sleeping on a soft mattress killed my back but I became accustomed to it quickly. I was moving into a very small space and since I'm in college I'll be moving at least once or twice more, and one of those possibly being overseas so compactness and versatility is definitely necessary.MY SLEEP EXPERIENCE: Having adjusted to a soft mattress prior to sleeping on this meant that I was definitely in for an adjustment period. It didn't take very long to adjust to it and I still find myself sleeping on my side and it's no less comfortable than sleeping on my back or stomach, though this is likely due to the fact that I have a firm side-sleeping pillow. I find myself getting very restful sleep and as much as I'm afraid of bugs, since you need to take good care of the flooring you place the futon on I don't feel concerned about bugs.FUTON QUALITY: It's very thick, I think I would've had issues sleeping on my side had I purchased the Rococo version of this futon. It's very nice thick cotton and it folds very easily, especially since it came folded in the package it arrived in. Even though it folds, there's really no noticeable fold flattening where the cotton kind of thins because its been folded so many times.YOUR OPTIONS: So there are other options on the futon market, there's the J-life shiki-futon which in my opinion looks like the cotton is going to flatten out or get all moved around inside and become bumpy in places. The Tuft & Needle mattress, I feel, can no longer be listed as a futon mattress, it is far to wide to fold and was never really meant to be a tri-fold mattress of any sort. I can easily see this futon mattress from EMOOR lasting several years if not many if you take care of it right (If I remember it, I'll come back at a later date and update how the quality is holding up).MY OPINION: I spent almost 4 months trying to determine what/which futon mattress to buy because I knew I wanted to move either cross-country or across the world and with a futon I could take it with me more easily than a traditional mattress. It also makes moving apartments way easier! All that being said, I think if you're set on buying a futon because they're just awesome and space-saving, save yourself the time and frustration of decision-making and get this. I feel like I'm sleeping more restfully now because I'm not sleeping on a mattress that is a brick but also not sleeping on jello.PS: It will say that it's going to take a month to arrive or longer but EMOOR used expedited international shipping so I got it in just under 2 weeks.Below is the mattress cover I purchased, it's more expensive than a normal fitted sheet but it has a zipper closure and is very nice, it has a wonderful clean cotton-y feel and keeps both sides of my futon off the floor and more resistant to any mites or bacteria on the floor.Magic anime bed fix poorly built American neck.I've been sleeping on this for about 3 1/2 years now and will never purchase a traditional mattress again. Traditional mattresses are either terrible on my back, or so expensive I can't even afford it. Plus they collect so much dirt and skin cells over time and are a pain to move. I am in LOVE with my futon. It's the perfect firmness, it feels cleaner b/c when I wash my sheets I hang it over my railing and shake it out and am able to vacuum my bedroom so much easier, and I can roll it up and put it away when I want more floor space. I literally think mattresses are so last century and everyone needs to make the shift to futons.Ive been sleeping on the futon on top of a tatami mat for several weeks. When I sleep on my back it's pretty much fine but it's a little harder than I'd like. I feel like it's what was advertised but I am looking into getting extra padding for it. Overall love it though.Buying this futon is one of the best decisions I have made in years. I've had many (normal) beds over the years and would always wake up in pain, tired or both. I used to sleep on the floor when I was a child because I loved it; not sure why I ever stopped, to be honest.I've used this futon for about a week now and I sleep through the night and actually wake up feeling energised.I was slightly put off this futon because of the price and noticing a lot of cheaper futons elsewhere, but I am so relieved that I chose EMOOR. You really cannot beat a good night's sleepReally good matress. I sleep pretty well and get to sleep extremely quickly most nights. Noticed a improvement on my back, only think I would say is it recently feels like my upper back is off.... which I've never had a problem with beforeI bought what I expected to be of the highest quality and standard since it is a traditional product made in the same country it is originating from: Shikibuton from Japan. However I am disappointed. The futon had folding lines and bulges due to storage and or shipping combined. It didn't go away even after several days. When lying on it, my spine is not straight. Not only that, the filling is uneven, I noticed when I turned it 180 degrees, putting my head where I rest my legs, my head would be on a slight incline. The futon is also not firm enough for my taste, I can easily push through it with my fingers and touch the Tatami on the other side, seems to be air mainly.Another star I'm removing is because of false advertisement, it says to be 3 inches thick while it is only about 1 inch.It was also inconvenience to pack the futon back into it's original shipping box as I had to reinforce it extra extra tape otherwise the box would tear and rip apart since the futon came in a vacuum sealed back. Needless to say, the futon didn't fit in its original bag anymore. The matress came in a vaccumed package from Japan just a day after the estimated delivery.Once I opened the packaging, the mattress started to absorb some air. The thickness of the mattress is acceptable. If you've never slept on the floor before, and are expecting this matress to be like a bed with box spring, that's not going to happen. From my perspective, this floor matress is nicely made and I am happy with my purchase. I would have liked more thickness that's why I have put 4 stars instead of 5.The instructions advise for placing the bed under the sun for 2-4hours for achieving the full density (Having sunlight is not an everyday option when you live in Vancouver, Canada).I slept my first night on this new mattress. First, I was surprised how thin it is. It's just about 1-1.5 inches. On the hardwood floor it's to hard to sleep. I put foam yoga mat underneath. Still it has hard. However, lower back pain relief I noticed almost right away when stretched my body on the floor. Side sleeping is less comfortable for the shoulders. I use my orthopedic pillow for sleeping. It's easier for the shoulder and neck to sleep on the side.I will update my review in few days to see if my investment into this expensive mattress was right decision. The quality of the product is perfect, the material, the stitches. I wish it was darker color though.
